Default New CSS 4" 'fullrange' w/ XBL^2 motor is out

So CSS has finally posted the new Adire Audio OEMed widerange driver. It has the XBL^2 motor, seems like a good candidate for a lot of the fullrange/widerange projects discussed here.

My first thought (mainly because its next in my upgrade path) is to build a very narrow, short, and deep speaker center channel with a top mounted super-tweeter (I mean REALLY short and narrow, say, 6" tall by 6" wide by whatever depth gives the desired internal volume. This is mainly to keep it simple and the woodworking to a minimum. Anyone else have thoughts on this driver, and possible applications?

Interesting. Look at their pricing information:
"Regular price US$69, C$89 each; pre-order special US$99, C$129 a pair plus shipping. Pre-order ends October 25th; delivery late October or early November."

I also wonder how it compares directly to the JX92S driver, at half the price.

I like the phase plug, reminds me of my Seas Excel drivers.

Likewise! I also am very interested in how it compares to the Jordan. For one thing I think the Jordan has better top end extension?

I built some JX92S bookshelf speakers a while back (Jim Griffin Mini-Monitor design), and I found the highs to be rather lacking, when comparing them to my 2-way speakers.

One thing that I hope, is that these drivers will be less delicate than the JX92s.

I am thinking about ordering a pair of these new drivers for bookshelf speakers. I was thinking about building a new pair of JX92S speakers, but since these are 1/2 the price, they are worth a try.

Interesting driver, reminds me of my excels too haha. It will be interesting to see how it performs in a distortion test. Also it has a very nice xmax for a 4.5" driver. It has a high Qts aswell which would predispose it to a midrange application in an open baffle.
Its a little insensative but no more then other 4.5" drivers and it has a nice low moving mass.

Should be rather good.

Could be a killer midrange for a 3-way, either closed or open baffle. I owe one of my brothers some speakers and I'll give it a try.

I was just thinking the exact same thing:

I haven't played with it much, but will try to get rid of the hump.

My initial numbers are:

L = 30
Zdriver = 10
Zport = 29
So/SL = 45
Rport = 1.0
Lport = 4.0

Could be tweaked I'm sure. My graph is just like yours. What's with the hump?

My numbers were quite similar. I ended up making the length longer and a little less So/SL.
