Question MathCad help

I know this is kind of off topic, so please forgive me. (Grovel, whine.) I only use MathCad for Martin's (ahem) loudspeaker software.

There are two things I can't figure out how to do with MathCad. I've looked in the on-line help and in a book, but so far I haven't found the answers.

1) I start typing into some empty place on the worksheet, for example,

NewThing := 4.5

If I want a new formula, it creates a new comment. If I want a new comment, it creates a new formula. How does it know? And how do I thwart it?

2) Some of Martin's variables have subscripts, i.e., V-sub-d. The only way I've figured out how to use one of those variables in a formula is to cut and paste it. How do I type a subscript?

3) (Bonus question) I want to display some value in square inches (for example). I type,

cross_section =

or whatever. It displays the answer in square feet. I've found where you change the default units. How do I cause just that one formula to be displayed in the units I choose?

Must be a new function of mathcad. The 2000 and 2001 versions I have dont do that

Subscripts are the period key, for example A sub b would be A.b

In mathcad 2000 and 2001, there is a clickable spot at the end of any answer that you can then type units into.

For instance A := 1 * in ^ 2
typing in A = and hitting enter gives you
A = 6.452 X 10 ^ -4 ∙ m^2 o

where o represents a small black box. If you click on that black box and type "in^2" and hit enter, it displays
A = 1 ∙ in^2

(1) As soon as you hit the space bar it changes the input field from forumula to text. If you start an input string with a " it converts to a text field. If you don't want an input to swap to a text field, don't hit the space bar.

(2) See above... hit the period key for a subscript that isn't functional, i.e. it is just part of the name and doesn't have any mathematical value. Hit the open bracket key [ for a subscript that is functional, i.e. uses the i = 1...2,10 type of array where the subscript denotes an array or vector position.

(3) See above... for clarification, you won't see that black "units" box until you click in the answer field. When you do, you can enter whatever form of units in that box that you want, even if they aren't consistent (MathCAD will simply add whatever is necessary to keep them consistent). When you click out of the answer field the black box is invisible.
