on a lark i threw in a bid on an eBay auction for a pair that will end in about 20 hours. They appear to be an interesting looking pair of 12" coaxials with a built in crossover. are these things okay in terms of sound quality? i was wondering if maybe there's a particular type of cabinet they are suited to...and if anyone has the specs on them, it would be cool, but i doubt specs exist. i was building a ghetto 70's sound system to play some LPs at acceptable sound quality levels(i'd go for better sound if i had any money).

I've seen the specs for those somewhere, but forget where. It really isn't that hard to measure.
Regardless, I do remember the Qts was around .7, so these want to be in a big sealed box. With sealed, size isn't super critical to success. I'd guess you could stick them in a 4-5 cu ft box and be happy. Maintaining golden ratios is a very good idea. They'd also work mounted on open baffles, but you would need to fill in the low bass with a subwoofer. Warning, these were designed during the tube era, so power handling may not be great. If you crannk up a solid state amp to clipping you will probably blow the tweeters. BTW, used PP 6BQ5 tube amps can be had for $50. These were pretty high end in their day. One of these days I'll get a pair myself, if only for the cool looks. GB |
