Default 18" Drivers, are they worth the trouble?

Hi, today I went to a salvage store to buy some books, and I couldn't help noticing these 2 18" drivers standing on the shelf there. I picked it up and they had a single voice coil, no labeling on them at all. The magnet seemed a little bit too small, the excursion was around 8 to 10mm. Since I am going to need some drivers no matter what for my senior project in high school. These were sold for $15 each. I think they would let me take pictures of them, and would anyone be interested in seeing those pictures?

I think these are a real bargain no matter how crappy those drivers are. The frame is stamped not layed out of whatever the frames are usually layed. I am going to build Rod Elliot's Project 68 probably the 500W version, and I think these should handle it, both driven from the same amp.

Thanks, Petar

What is your senior project? Would it involve construction of something or analysis of something. If it is both analytical and construction oriented, then these could be a good project. Measure the driver’s TS parameters and regardless of what they are, determine their best use and then build that product. I have found, for me, that using all of the software-based programs to measure TS parameters is easy, but it doesn't bring a good understanding of the real parameters. Recently, I have chosen to measure them using only a generator (PC soundcard based) and a DMM and the mass added method. If nothing else, I have gained a better understanding of what the numbers mean.

If your project encourages both analyzing and building, these could be a great start.

But offer $25. . . or $20 for the pair. If it is for a school project, they may offer an even better deal.

Sandy.

Hi, the senoir project in my school involves in building something and writing a paper about, then presenting the whole thing in front of a jury of judges. So wanted to build something that I can use later, and I already have 2 nice loud speakers that I want to add some bass to. And I don't think they could hande 300-500W. I am going to the store tomorrow, and I am going to bargain them for $20 since I only have ~$150 to spend on this thing anyway.

I think I will go the you don't know what kind they are what paremeters they have, and I am going to ask them what they based the price on, and try to convince them that they are not even worth that much.

Many thanks, Petar
