Ive been researching the THOR TL design for some time now and im just itching to start work on it. But like a lot of others, my drivers cant be that expensive, so some daytons will have to suffice. In the other thread on the THORs someone said that they used Daytons instead with another Xover.
I found this design, at PE http://www.partsexpress.com/projects...l/default.html Anybody build this? This is essentially a 1 woofer version of the Thor /w daytons. How does it sound? |

Rolf,
I haven't heard that speakers but some suggestions: - get some drivers and an xo design (follow a design or get a kit etc), then get MJK's mathcad sims and design your own TL - the xo is the hard part, it's not hard at all to design a TL - if you go with that design, just have a look at the drivers to see that they have a reasonably flat response etc

Well, to call the dB16TL a Thor is just not correct, the Thor being an MTM TL with Seas drivers designed by Joe D, the dB16TL is a totally different design - TM TL designed by Dave Brown with crossover design borrowed from one of Wayne Jaeschke's designs using the same drivers. Regardless, I have heard very good things about the dB16TL, although as I understand it, they are rather picky about placement. For a more Thor-styled design, check out CurtC's Triune TL which has received rave reviews on the Parts Express Board. Ask there for more information on both these designs, the designers post there on a very regular basis and many board members have built their designs.
Good luck.

Thor is a great design but certainly not one restricted to the original drivers. In fact the original can be improved upon somewhat in the bass extension by using woofers with a higher Qts than the original. If I were you I'd decide on a budget and then cruise through driver specs til you find some close to Thor's originals, keeping in mind that if anything a bit higher woofer Qts would be a good thing.
The main alteration you'll face is in the crossover, as it was originally designed to account for the response peak in the Seas woofers above the crossover Fc, but some minor tweaking of values will probably do the trick. A reading of how Joe designed the crossover would be very helpful to understand how it works and thus how to alter it for different drivers. |

There is a MTM version that is supposed to be better than the MT.

Wow. Those 2 driver daytons look like they might just be the ticket. With parts only running like 200 bucks My bookshelfs might just become my surrounds pretty soon.
Im really hurting for a center channel though first, mine is just getting eaten up by my left and rights. Thanks for the input guys. |

Rolf,
I realise that money is an issue, it sure is with me too. The fact of the matter is though you just aren't building Thors if you change the drivers and crossover. If you do this it might possibly a great speaker, something that even sounds close to a Thor? but they are not a Thor. The issue I go through is whether I can replicate something that someone(s) with a Phd in the field with so many years experience have done, for a fraction of the cost. It has been done though, there are some really nice TL kits for sale here which are pretty much thors using Vifa drivers. I've done a lot of listening of these and they exhibit all of the characteristics and advantages of TL Design (broad detailed bass, open mid range, no 'boxy' sound). Maybe they can give you some ideas. Cheers Rod |

Yeah, I know they wont be THORs truely. I was just referring to the TL box design. Ill prolly be designing a center channel to match the drivers in the above design for good integration (except in shielded)

There is a Thor-look-a-like with Dayton speakers at http://www.boxen-baustelle.de/ but I can't find a construction plan there.
