Hi Rocky,

I've used metal (cast Al) for quite some time. If you hold up the horn alone in the air by its flange and give it a thump, it will ring like a bell. You can hear this resonance very distinctly when you play music through them. You need to damp the resonance in metal horns.

I've always used heavy rubber or neoprene and glue and strap it to the outside of the horn. The tighter the straps, the better. You can see what I did with my current horns here. After this treatment, if you thump the horn as before, the ringing will have dissappeared as the ringing while playing music through them has.

If you're making your own horns, I would suggest, what ever metal you decide on, to very the thickness of the horn walls to lower the Q of the resonance.
