Default Computer speakers, $150 per cabinet

Looking to build a set of "better than normal" computer speakers. I've got power, and assume wood is a separate budget. For $300 total for speakers/electronics, what would you go with for some nearfield bookshelfs whose sole use will be for computer audio (mp3, cd, internet streams), and gaming.

Like I said, I'm not looking for like seas excel MTM quality or anything like that, just a better computer speaker than I can buy off the shelf. Better than klipsch promedias (and hopefully by a lot, cuz those speakers really really suck)

It'll be optical out from my soundcard (realtek alc850). Power is still up in the air. I'm just looking for solid drivers in the budget, I'll work around them later.

Looking pretty seriously at northcreek tweeters, maybe something like vifa MG 7" mids?

That is a neat budget for a computer monitor. Assuming you're willing to go not to big consider following
Peerless HDS 134 woofer
Peerles WA 10 tweeter (or Seas KT27F, would be even better, also Peerless XT25 would do nicely but is a little more expensive)

5 liter net Box, BR, F3 about 60-70 HZ, You can go bigger with more bass but if you go much bigger than consider another woofer

It will stay within budget and will also perform very well in small room hifi systems.

Roland Ma-8 is a pretty nice set of powered computer monitors, very lacking in bass though.

What about the rear design from that kit? Uses the same tweeter that quite a few designs use (adire's stuff most notably), and both of the drivers for the kit happen to be on sale at p/e right now, so I could get all electronics for probably right around $100.

Can't go wrong with that

any opinions?

What about this one? It's a little above what you were looking to spend, but uses quality drivers and is pretty small:
