Default making a driver into a coax?

HELLO! i just finished a pair of speakers (well...i built 5 boxes...yay for 5.1!) with the mcm 55-1870 drivers...they are a little lacking in the highs and i don't have much room on the boxes to add tweeters...unless i used some REALLY tiny ones...

so i was wondering if it was possible or hard to make them into coax driver? i have googled and the like but haven't found and REALLY good rescources...sooo...can you guys help me? thanks!

look up the CDT braxial series. Interesting and fairly good looking solution.

I fooled around with this a little but haven't gone back to it yet. Sounded pretty good for a prototype.

hmmm...that seems like a pretty good idea...but this is a 5" speaker... so i'm thinkin that the tweeter is still gonna have to be tiny...any recomenations?

and could i just affix it with a dowel rod?

EDIT: maybe i could build a matching enclosure that i could just set on top of the box?

Go to your local Radio Shack store and ask them to look up a model 40-1310 supertweeter. If they don't have it ask them to look up the stores in the surrounding area. They should be on clearance for $9.97 (at least they are here). It's intended to be an add-on tweeter in it's own enclosure and stand that sits on top of an existing speaker. It comes with a built in 2nd order XO set at 5Khz but you can easily remove it and add your own. I just used a single cap and padding resistor. Works great.

i'd REALLY like to stay away from mounting the tweeter on the very top of the box...i just think that it looks ghetto...

i do remember seeing a speaker somewhere where the tweeter was mounted under the dustcap...but i don't think i could find anything small enough...

But the actual diameter is more like 35mm -- ApexJr has a version of this tweeter that can be carved down (if you don't want the mounting tabs) and stuck on a dowel attached to the (duscapless) polepiece ala the PHY-HP.

And i know he has a special price on these for diyaudio (the post has been moved to the Audio Vendor's Bazaar which should become visible any time now).
