It can be done, but makes as much sense as building a car from the parts: it would cost you ten times what it costs to buy the finished product. You can buy all the components, but generally not in quantities less than 100 at a time.

The exception here is electrostatics, which aren't seen much, and where making your own is pretty much the only option. Run a google on it to find sources.

A couple of threads to look for on this forum:

1. There was a very large DIY Driver thread that went on for months ~1 year ago.

2. The recent DIY Parthenon thread that was actice until about a month ago.

3. DIY Ribbon that is currently active but was much more so a couple months ago.

Other resources on Planar Magnetic/Ribbon:

4. http://www.magnetostatic.com

5. http://ldsg.snippets.org/ALSR/index.php3

Don't try it to save money but it could be a neat DIY project.

Rolling your own, all the way down hill!

I've done it for clients before, but it is a daugnting task. I was in the thick of the Parthenon project but family obligations have pulled me away there not being enough time to get it going untill the fall.

THe bottom line is that it is an expensive idea. Bill is correct in that you have to buy parts in larger quantities. Some suppliers will sample some stuff. But you need a michine shop and a magnetiser. Something that not all of us have in our backyards!!
Unless you have some experience in the field just learn the ropes by doing a bunch of reading and then dissassemble some drivers and learn how they work. It will be a real education.
