my question is this: should i soundproof the outside of the PVC before i box it and enclose the whole thing, or would it be pointless

The pvc pipe rings like a bell if you dont damp it with something. I've used Henry's roofing cement to hold lead sheets on before and it works very well. Even if you box up the whole thing you still need to damp the pipe as the resonance will come out the port end.

yea but that wouldnt work with all the curves involved...any other suggestions?

how about the spray-on foam or the paint on soundproof liquid.

simply dampening the box with foam outside the pvc pipe wouldnt work, right?

I've been pondering using PVC as well, but without all the curves. I assume that a thin grout or concrete (small aggregate) would be ideal although very heavy. High Expansion insulating foam (used for sealing around pipes and entry doors in home and industrial construction) is alot lighter but I'm not sure what the final resonant frequency would be.

Lead sheeting is very flexible and can be cut into strips then applied to most of the surface. You dont have to cover every inch with the lead but do with the roofing goop. The spray foam stuff is useless for damping resonances like this, it is way to light and not internally damped.
