Default Vifa D19 in a 2-way

I was given a pair of Vifa D19 tweeters by a friend of mine to use for experimenting in a 2-way bookshelf. However I got in a hurry and didn't look at the tweeter specs, looks like Vifa reccomends a 5kHz 2nd order crossover. I can't find a woofer that will cross over that high but still have decent low end extension (Would like to get to 50Hz or so). If all else fails I can find a different tweeter that will cross over a little lower. Originally I wanted to use a 5 1/4" Dayton aluminum cone woofer with this tweeter but I'm thinking that the 1 1/8" Dayton tweeter would work well.

Use a fostex fullrange driver configured as midbass... You can cross wherever you want.. basically..

I've just had a look at my Vifa data sheets and you are correct about them recommending a 5 k hz X-over but that isn't necessarily their final word. In their own specs on the same page it also specifies that the frquency range of the unit is 3k to 20k. I know that magazines in Aust. have published two-ways with the D19 coming in at around 3 k. These project are usually done in co-operation with the speaker distributor so they have some claim to semi-official status. If you used 3k the power handling would go down of course. You might try a fourth order net work. Thiele makes the point that it is good if you can have an inductor as the last element before the drive unit as the low impedence of an appropriate coil helps damp the resonance frequency. Vifa make the same comment in their recommendations.

Use it with a small mid or mid/woofer and cross at or above 3000 Hz with a high order filter.

What about the W14RC-25-08 5 1/2" driver by Silver Flute from Madisound? Specs look favorable for this application. I could cross the woofer over at 3600Hz in a 2nd order Bessel with a 3rd order bessel filter on the tweeter. If I were to use their suggested cabinet site of 10 liters (0.35ft^3) an F3 of 55Hz would be acceptable. Has anyone ever used Sliver Flute parts? Any luck with them? I was looking at the ribbon tweeters as something cheap to play with at some time. Thanks again for any input.

I've used the small Silver Flute. This woofer is not good for a crossover point that high. It's got a large and odd-shapped breakup node. It's a nice woofer, and far better imho than most of the Dayton offerings, but not suited for that application.

If you're not locked in to that 50 hz low end, I would mate that tweeter with a pair of 4" Tangbands. If you really want the low end, look for a larger tweeter.
