Still on the hunt for a small woofer for my 3 way.
Came across these on partsexpress, graph & specs look reasonable. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshow...=297-441&DID=7 Taken from Swans site: " Incorporated into the Diva line of loudspeakers manufactured by Swans the M6N earned the Exceptional Value Award at The Home Entertainment Show 2000. Advanced alloy (magnesium\aluminum) cone, coated with special damping material, having very good rigidity and dynamic stability, improving the acoustic features of the driver; High power handling, heat-resistant Kapton? voice coil former and heat-resistant SV voice coil wire;Shielded magnetic system with long-throw linear excursion design;Hi-Vi Symmetric Motor Drive (SMD) technology makes the voice coil into a symmetrical driving magnetic field, thus acquiring symmetrical driving force, reducing voice coil inductance and back electromotive force modulation, improving the controllability of the speakers;Low distortion degree; Finite Element Analysis for flat & rigid iron frame, prevents the parasitic structural resonances " They seem like excellent value - are there any users out there with experience? PS (will be using 2 per sealed 1 cuft. box, hence the high Re & high Qts appealed) |

The 8" version has a lot of fans. The 6" driver is probably good as well. Just be careful with your crossover. That aluminum cone probably has a nasty ringing peak somewhere within its frequency range.

This may or may not be relevent to your need. The Sept. edition of AudioXpress 2003 has the start of a 3 part feature on the HiViM8a in a 2-way system. The entire article is quite indepth, featuring internal bracing, building and testing the crossovers and a host of other information you would want. Check it out.

I'm also interested in the MN6 and (more importantly) the MN5. They both have wonderfully low Vas and Fs, however they also have wonderfully low Xmax

Thanks,
as they will be crossed at about 300hz, the breakup shouldnt be a problem - using dual drivers should overcome the xmax limit & in a sealed box I'm only getting an f3 of 70hz which is fine as I using a sub. I havent used aluminium cones before & my may concern was sound quality - what Ive read suggest they are very good for bass. |

If you're going to cross over that low, I'd definitely recommend the M8N (or the M8A if you can get it). About twice the displacement of the 6" driver. I'm going to be building a pair of speakers from the Audioxpress article mentioned, just have to wait 8-10 wks for the woofers to arrive
Why bother with 2 6" drivers?Ron |

You raise a valid point why use a 6.5" for bass?
The reason is I'm trading extension for efficiency (not max SPL). As I am using a sub I dont need 40hz, 60hz is fine. A single 8 (the 8mn is 86db) isnt enough, hence mutliple drivers. As I'm limited to 1 cu ft, I could only fit a single 8 in that volume. The 6.5 will work in 1/2 cu .ft so I can fit 2 in the same volume. So I can theoretically achieve 93db, with f3 of 60hz in 1cu.ft |
