I Just bought 32 of these:
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=269-568 I bought them not because I had ideas of making good speakers out of them, but because I'm new to DIY speakers and wanted to put together some very cheap speakers to get a handle on the process. I also got some cheap tweeters, and I have some unused speakers with better drivers than the ones I just bought that I could use if I were to try to actually make decent speakers. What I'm looking for now is ideas on different kinds of speaker designs. I'm interested in both standard and outlandish designs, remembering though that I'm new to this and have fairly limited resources. Any suggestions? |

What about using them in bessel arrays?
4 x 4 = 16 x 2 = 32... Grretings, B.

Check out linev2.jpg. I made a couple sets of line arrays with those pioneers. They sound terrific!

Something like this is certainly inexpensive but the sound is not cheap; I'd put these up against anything on the market selling for up to $500 each. Do some research on line arrays and prepare to be amazed at how good an inexpensice speaker can sound.

Somewhere around here I have a network topology figured to combine with 32 of those odd shaped $0.69 Onkyo buyout tweeters PE has.
I'm running a single one of those 4" drivers with an Audax mylar buyout tweeter in an open baffle and the sound is great - as long as you're nearfield and have tons of bass EQ'd in. I'm also running those in MMTMMs in my HT right now, supported on the bottom end by an IB sub. Lotsa fun to be had. C |

where is that software program that will predict frequency response for line arrays??
i.e. putting some in parallel and in series to even the frequency response. They need a notch filter at 7kHz... why is there a dip at 15khz and is there a way around it?? is it an interaction between dustcap and surround?? Thanks! |

Go To VPR (Vertical Polar Response for line arrays).

I don't think that's going to do what he wants it to. At any rate don't bother trying to run full range; aside from the spike the off-axis horizontal response isn't any good above 6kHz anyway. Crossover to a tweeter array at 5 to 6kHz with 3rd order filtering and the peak isn't a problem. As for the frequency response of an array on the horizontal plane it's the same as a single driver; the vertical response narrows as the array height is increased. You don't use a parallel/series wiring scheme to even response, but you do have to do so to maintain the proper impedance load on the amp. |

Wow..that's expensive shipping.. I purchased 128 of them, ups ground, and it only cost me 62.72 to ship the four boxes and 10 pcs of the 3/8 tweet and 10 pcs of the 3/4 tweet (I wanted some of each to see what tweeter I was gonna use..I eventually bought 200 of the 3/8 dome..) Cheers, John |
