Just a quick question, should a speaker driver mounted in an Open Baffle be mounted off-set towards the inside edge of the baffle??
Does this inside edge off-set arrangement assist with imaging like it does in multi-way speakers? My proposed Fostex 206E Open Baffle design has a surface area of 2' x 4' x 6" wings, and I may mount a Fostex FW405 in this baffle or go Bass Reflex for full-on bass in the future. Thanks in advance... Regards, Steve M. |

The driver should be slightly offset - I don't think it matters too much if it is to the inside or outside but you can always swap the baffles over and try both!

Golden ratio - Example?
Note that due to its low Q the FE206E will have very restricted bass before you even consider the additional baffle roll-off. sreten.

Thanks Nuuk & sreton, I will apply the 0.8:1 or 0.6:1 ratio for the driver offset.
Sreton: I am not expecting great bass from the 206E. From what I've read extensively on the net I don't think these type of single drivers do a lot of bass. Having heard the 206E in a 20L bass reflex box optimally loaded using WINISD, there was not any strong bass to speak of. My intention to use this driver either in a BR box or open baffle is to enjoy it's electrostatic like imaging qualities, and the immediacy and coherence that only a point source single driver achieves. Proper and deep bass will be sorted out later either using a dipole/TL subwoofer or a properly tuned BR box of about 180L with something like the 16" 96dB Fostex FW405 woofer. With respect to the off-set driver question, did you notice a big difference between offset vs. central mounting on the baffle, and what was the qualitative difference sound wise? Regards, Steve M. |
