What exactly do you want help with? You need be more specific

But I will help with this. If you want BIG speakers, make the subs really really big. Not your rear and surround chanels. 90% of the time the surrounds are just sitting there not playing anything. In movies, the only time you'll ever hear them is when a helicopter flies by, or something like that. Most program comes from the center. With music (all of your cd's are in 2 channel stereo) I prefer listening in plain old stereo. Maybe you want all speakers pushing air? It would be kind of wasteful to have the best speakers in the world sitting there 90% of the time. Even if you are using them full time, it doesn't seem right to have an enormous speaker that only plays down to 80 Hz. If it is just for the visual effect, close off a large bottom section and fill them with sand! Be sure to put them where you want them first, cuz they aint goin nowhere once you fill em!

they put out if you know what i mean......
i am set in these amps because the give the best bang for the buck.......

Let me see if i can say this gently... no i can't. If the amps sound like c%$& there is NO bang for the buck. And power ratings are often next to meaningless -- i have heard 200W amps clip before 20 W ones (ie the 20W amp put out more power than the 200W).

So we have our 1st impediment -- trying to make a set of speakers sound good with C%$&&* amps.

I just can't imagine spending money on those amps when the money could be much more effectively distributed.

I don't think i want to play anymore.

Methinks you a true sportsman and a gentleman for playing at all.

thanx for that Bill.

If he wants to play by my rules, i will gladly lend him my assistance to put together a system that does what he needs, with the most bang-for-the-buck. But insisting on those hulking monsters without consideration to anything else is a blind alley/dead end.

Easy there, Slice...

I know it's frustrating to follow a rosy spec sheet into a blind alley of public opinion. I think we've all been on that journey (more than once?). Spec sheets are interesting light reading, and unfortunately they've sold many bits o' kit, sight unseen.
But, at some point these performance prodigies get listened to--and that's where the rubber meets the road and the poopie meets the fan.

There's a famous poem that begins: "Listen my child, and you shall hear..."

Read no farther, that's all the advice you'll ever need. Listen. Listen to live, dead, revival, whatever. Listen to good systems recommmended to you by people you trust, then ask yourself if there's blood coming out of your earholes.

Ask yourself why knowlegable fans of all types of music listen to amps ranging from 0.1 watt to Gigawatts and then argue about which is better. The answer is that there is magic sprinkled on both extremes, and in between, too. But between the magic sprinkles, there are great gobs of poopie, usually with fantastic spec sheets.

I don't think anyone's trying to be condescending here. There is no secret knowlege club. There is only knowlege, and subjective opinion, both tempered and refined by experience--listening.

So if Dave gets a tad exasperated at being asked to help design speakers for Crown xxx amps, it's probably just because Dave's been down that road, and Dave don't play that.

Listen, learn, and keep that mind wide open.

Bill

that my very point i dont have $60,000 to spend!
well thank for understanding Bill F.
i really would like to know what is wrong with the crown ce2000's
but you have to consider i have limmited funding and i cant go and spend 60,000 dallars on a singal amp......
that is why crown looks so promosing to me.....cheap yet good specs....well i think so anyway?i am not sure what good is.....

More Money Than Sense ?

Hello slicemaster101,
With the the sort of budget that you are proposing here, I suggest that you get around to some music shop/pro-audio shops and audition some large modern active speakers.
An example of what is available is here - http://www.yorkville.com/default.asp
Some modern active cabinets can go way loud and with EQ can sound pretty good, or at least seriously impressive on movie soundtracks.
With the cash you save on all those Crown amplifiers and drivers, you'd have enough to add a mixing desk and and hire your system out when you are at the hearing specialist.
By the sounds, you are a newbie audiophile with cash to burn, so aside from the "I built it myself" satisfaction factor, I expect you will get the instant home theatre loudness results you want this way.
17 yr. old and i am a new diy'er
and budget for 5 Crown Amps and speakers.
Hmmmm................

Eric.

A friend for Kilowatt ?

so the crown amps are ok?
the system is going to be used in a home theater.....hell with that much power you could just call it a theater....well
i want it to sound great on movies and good with music......
that is why i am here......
i would like to build my own speakers and drive them withthe crown ce2000 but if crown sux what else for the price? i am shurly open to sugestions.....
and by the way what is EQ?

thanks,
Slice

I don't know who Jocko is, but this certainly rouses some suspiscion. That pic of your sub looks surprisingly nice for a 1st timer, not to mention one who needs our "openions."
\(just kidding)

Slice, by the way, you never did tell us how much you are willing to spend. How much are you will ing to spend, Slice?

Also, who's paying?

mrfeedback-good sugestion
slice-take that into consideration
