Lightbulb Has anyone tried Corssun's Loudspeaker kits?

Has anyone tried Corssun's loudpeaker kits? You can check em' out at http://www.corrson.com/kits.html ? I'm a newbie planning to start my first DIY project. Do check the stuff out and advise me on whether it's a good start or not.

Thanks

Simply not enough information for an informed opinion.

I visited Corrson's office, they had a listening room set up there with the assembled kits playing. To my untrained ears, they sounded very nice indeed.

However, since the intent (I assume) is DIY, why build a kit? Corrson will sell drivers (a VIFA TC14 or TC18 is a good start), so you can build the cabinet and mount them yourself. Will save you some money, too!

Then again, it's probably better for beginners to try their hand with slightly less expensive locally available drivers, for example Bolton, Peerless India or Dainty. These usually dont have any published T/S specs, but you should be measuring drivers before use anyway.

Shahrukh, others have taken this route, like Vivek. I'm not sure if he's finished his cabinets yet. I will hopefully be finishing up in a few days' time (A rather squat ported floorstander, with a Vifa TC18, local tweeter, custom 12dB/oct crossover) When I'm done, if the results aren't too embarrasing, I'll post pics.

The drivers are fine, and you don't have to worry about coming up with a proper crossover. Can't help on the price aspect, haven't a clue what a rupee is in USD. Check out kits at Madisound and Parts Express to see if the prices seem in line.

Hello Shahruk

The kits are excellent, a little pricey in my eyes.
I think these vifas are over rated, i have a few of the TC14WG49-08 and they sound rather dark and shut in,
It depends on the kind of music you listen to?
What do you want from your speakers?
There has always got to be a brief.

Roadkill,
Neat cabinet. Did you use real wood veneer? I have built two 90L boxes and presently, I am using 55L for each TC18 with a 50mm dia port about 10cm long. Yesterday, I bought two more TC18s and I am going the MTM way in all probability. Corrson has built an MTM system with the TC18 and D27 tweeter. I still have a long way to go. By the way, what dia and length is your port?

Shahrukh, DIY not buy. Period. This may sound blunt but there is no fun in just putting together a few screws and joining a couple of wires here and there. DIY man. Take it from me, the speaker will sound very good if you have designed it from scratch. That is the satisfaction you get even if is not exactly a B&W Nautilus.

Vivek

My cab uses prelaminated 18mm MDF, real veneer would've been a pain to glue and clamp, besides, I dont have very large clamps The thing's really heavy! At first, my port was going to be around 28 cm long, but I redesigned the port such that it fits the default length of Corrson's ports (I used the 68 mm one) of 13.5 cm. The response didn't look too bad either.

As a side note, I used some nice Chromium plated screws to fix the woofer, I thought they lent a somewhat "industrial" feel to the speakers. They're held in place with Tee Nuts.

Isn't 90l way too big for even a pair of TC18s?

I thought Corrson's MTM system is based on the TC14. Anyway, I spoke to Mr Shiva (who owns Corrson), who's of the opinion that 28 l is the ideal size for a vented box for a TC18. I tried very hard to get a 28l box to look decent in WinISD but to no avail (except with ridiculous figures for port length). So I finally settled on 43l. There's a slight rise of around 1 dB in the freq. response, but that's fine by me.

Just in case anyone wants to go beyond the TC14 or TC18, Shiva told me he can import, on request, any of DST's line of speakers, including ScanSpeaks, if you're willing to pay for them. Remember he's DST's official rep for India.

Sorry Shahrukh, if I threadjacked your post...

Which shop did you buy the T nuts from? I was in need of it myself.

I am not using the entire 90L. I have made two sections in each box and the one used for the TC18 is 55L.

Shiva told me the same thing and he has built another MTM system with the TC18 and D27. Ajju and I paid him a visit last Saturday.

How is the bass in your speaker? Are you satisfied with the performance? How does the tweeter sound?

Vivek
