What's the impedance and frequency response of this speaker? Rick's site shows a plot that is flat from 200Hz and up, but I assume that that is without the subwoofer. Thanks.

Rick could better answer this question than I can but I'll tell you what I know. The AC-130's have a F3 of 87 hz and F6 of around 70 hz sealed which is where I'm crossing the subs. I don't know what ported would be.
They are 5 ohms as wired with a 97 1/2 db sensitivity. A very easy load for mosy amps. I believe Rick said they could be wired differently to raise the impedance to around 8 ohms but it would reduce the sensitivity to around 95 db. HTH Jim Quote:

Jim, could you say a little more about the integrated subwoofers? How low do they go? If I am going to build these, I don't want to end up having to build another pair of 'real' subs too
. Right now I have two tempests powered by 750watts each and they are more than enough, but if I build these arrays, the tempests will have to find another home . I am guessing that they are plenty for music, but how about for home theater use? Also, out of curiousity, what other speakers are you using with these? |

Hey jholtz, your array looks quit impressive. I am a huge fan of arrays, and you can't find them anywhere in stores. Therefore they impress everyone!
I've been building speaker enclosures and speakers themselves from scratch for quit some time now and have recently started an array as well. I have included a picture. I am not finished the project yet...The array in the picture shows 18 paper cone tweeters made by Matsushita, its wired for 4 ohms and sounds amazing. The dispersion is incomparable to anything I've heard. When completed, this line of tweeters will bolt onto the front of a ported 4 cubic foot box housing four 6" speakers. I will send pictures and specs when I am done. |

The AV-12’s MKII’s are from Stryke and are true subs. They’re made by TC Sounds. They aren’t currently available as John is switching from TC Sounds to building them himself. I picked these because they were highly regarded for sound quality and worked well in a 1 cu3^ft sealed cabinet with a .7 box Q. Sound quality was my number one criteria rather than home theater rumble. That said, these are also home theater enthusiasts favorites because of their ability to get down low. I my room, based on a very unreliable radio shack meter, they’re pretty flat down to 25 or so before they roll off hard. The PE plate amp I’m using has a built in adjustable EQ feature so it’d be easy to bump the very low end a bit. I also bought an AV-15 at the same time that I’m going to build as a stand alone sub and roll it in very low with the EQ cranked on it for home theater use only.
You could use a variety of different drivers in the array cabinets with good results. I think Rick is offering Peerless XLS 12” and TC Sounds TC2+ subs as an option but you’d need to talk to him for specifics. BTW, the dual AV-12’s do a very nice job on home theater in spite of the fact that I have them configured primarily for music. I use a custom design W-T/M-W center that Rick did for me also that uses (2) L21 Seas 8” woofers, a Focal 5W4252 5” mid and a Hiquphon OWIII tweeter. Sealed cabinet of course. The surrounds are a budget 3-way design that Rick also did the crossover for called JH3’s. They use a Morel MDT-12 tweeter, Dayton 2” mid dome and a Vifa M21 8” woofer. They sound very good for an inexpensive main speaker and work great for surrounds. BTW, the JH 3 is a free design and is posted at www.audioDIYcentral.com if you have an interest. HTH Jim |
