Default Noob wants to replace drivers in Rocket 150

Hi there,
I have a pair of Rocket 150 speakers that dont sound so great:
http://www.av123.com/products_produc...rs&product=1.1

I really like the cabinet though!!
I was wondering if I could just replace the tweeter and the 5.25inch woofer with better parts and have a better speaker. Any thoughts? Any recommendation on parts for this project?

Please forgive my noobness if this is a dumb thread

AV123.com seems to be offline for now (and I can't find the speakers online anywhere), but that's besides the point. You will likely get better sound with better drivers in the box, but you won't get the most out of the speakers unless you select bass drivers with a similar optimal cabinet volume as the originals, and tweeters that have similar fundamental resonances. The woofer and tweeter have to have around the same sensitivities. PLUS, the crossovers probably have to be redone. Most crossovers are made only to accomodate a certain tweeter and woofer and no others. By changing all these components, you can improve the sound incredibly, but you really have to know what you are doing. If you're a noob like you say you are, though, it might only be worthwhile to put foam padding on the basket of the woofer, spray the inside of the cabinet with an acoustic dampener, and change the crossover components to better ones with the same value capacitors, inductors, resistors, etc. This might be enough of an improvement to satisfy your thirst for better sound. BTW, it's so nice to see more people getting into diy audio.

Well if you swap out everything, i.e. mount the original
mid/bass, tweeter and crossover in another box then
fitting one of Denis Murphy's excellent designs is possible.

Thanks guys,
I was looking for a simple driver replacement solution. The cabinets are extremely heavy and damp, so I dont think modifying them will help much.

I would look at a crossover replacement with the 2 new drivers.

Any suggestions for drivers to fit this volume cabinet with a rear port. Would sealing the port give me other options?
