Default How are phase plugs sealed?

There isn't any air leakage around a dust cap, but aren't phase plugs directly attached to the pole piece? What seals the gap between the voice coil former/cone and the pole piece?

I think the question may have been what stops the air from escaping the box thru the small air gaps presented by a phase plug, you know the small gap of coil between teh pole piece.

Nothing however I think is done. Simply the drivers dont produce enough pressure to force air out thru such a tiny gap, along the huge air path it would also have to take. Would provide good cooling me thinks of the coil tho

Hmm... I was thinking a thin membrane of latex might be used. Oh well, you learn something new every day.

That is indeed true.

I dunno if anyone has actually done this cept me, but the phase plugs on SE drivers are NOT fixed, they are screwed in and can be removed. That billet of nice copper you see does not extend all the way down to the pole piece, it goes to just below the front of the voice coil so it looks like it does. Behind the solid bit is a cylinder of copper which extends to the polepiece.

Pics of dissection process

First up is me pushing the cone back a little bit, you can see the two seperate peices. Next is the bullet bit removed. Standby for next pics

Next is the copper ring removed, and then finally both the plug and the ring seperately.

Hi Matt, nice detailed pics. I can't see how the copper ring stays in place. It looks like its free to rub against the former. Or does is rely on the phase plug to keep it in place when screwed tight?

it looks like there is a machined portion on the pole piece that the copper ring goes onto so it is centered and it won't move. then again, I may be wrong..........

You are indeed correct. There is also a machined section of the phase plug too, so the section at each end keeps the ring in place.
