ok im designing speakers with the intent of making some seriously high quality high power speakers with a nice high spl - flat response curve etc etc. What i need is a decent amp to test them with. Can anyone make some suggestions of what to look at and anything i should consider before buying. Im after something that will be sufficently powerful yet clean enough so that i can reliably test the speakers. Ta

Are you testing the speaker with professional tools and chamber? If so, then I don't have no idea but as far as I know people use no special amp for that purpose.
If you are testing by simply listening, what you want to do is to use system (not only amplifier but more importantly the source) that will expose the ability of the speaker: 1) You want an amplifier that have enough power to drive the speaker to its intended maximum power 2) You want an amplifier that have no problem in driving the speaker (matched impedance). To be sure, use amp with parallel output devices, or enough headroom (surely not tube amps) 3) The source. Almost any amplifier is good enough, but you may not know the quality of your speaker (in term of sound quality it produce) untill you use a good source. 4) I guess it is better to test the speaker with similar amp that will be used (if it were intended for field use) |
