Would 3 or 4 beanbags stuffed with the small polystyrene pieces stacked in a corner make an effective bass trap? If some air space is mandatory maybe add some mylar balloons glued closed in the center (of course that would render them useless for sitting on).

If the PS beans are open cell foam and the bag is acoustically transparent, I bet it will absorb nicely in the midbass, at least as well as a good-sized St. Bernard.

It could work.
I once made a similar experiment to reduce the reflections from the rear wall. I piled up a whole lot of textile (as in clothe, towels, sheets...you name it, it was there). It worked well till my wife came home. Magura
