Default Frogs: The ultimate midrange?

After enjoying a wonderful oyster dinner, I'm relaxing on the front porch with an apertif, listening to the frogs in our side yard pond.

These frogs are only about 2" long if you stretch them out. Maybe 3/4 - 1" in the body.

When I look at them through the binoculars from the front porch, the membrane that comes out and makes the croak is about 3/4" across. As you know, frogs are very loud. I live on a regular city lot and they keep the restless sleepers awake at this time of year.

I am only estimating but from about 40 ft away they are able to deliver around 85 dB. This is more than loud enough to interupt conversation. Not to mention startle your friends when they get going.

What kind of acoustic energy is needed to make it that loud from an organic membrane only 3/4" diameter from that distance?

Just curious on a Friday night,

Cal

Dave, are you up early or late?

The cricket is what always amazed me. From some pretty tiny generators, it produces a sound which can carry for a kilometer in all directions.

I would suspect the membrane is used to form a resonant cavity,
and its changing shape changes pitch rather than producing the
sound, what actually drives the resonant system I don't know.
