Greetings,
I am looking for a bookshelf speaker project to build. I realize I would learn more using speaker workshop, but as a first project I want to focus on building a project and slowly graduating up to measuring and designing. I do however have several restrictions. I want to spend $100 - $200 Canadian without the enclosure. Drivers that I can buy in Canada (PE airmail to Canada is a killer not to mention the duties). A largeish two way bookshelf system in the 6-1/2" woofer range. A matching center channel would be a bonus! A simple (i.e rectangular) enclosure (I have a tablesaw, router, jigsaw ...) I want to use some free wood that I got. It is from an old desk, about 1-1/4" thick and I imagine oak or a similar hardwood. Is this appropriate material for an enclosure? I have looked at the Silver Flute project on John's Audio page and I am considering that one. The various Dayton projects look ok, but I cannot find a Canadian source so they are out. Tang Band drivers look like a good price to me and are available in Canada, but I have not found much info for completed Tang Band projects. I would appreciate any links to projects that fit the above. Thanks. |

I have heard really great things about this speaker
http://murphyblaster.com/content.php?f=MBOW1.html It has a rear port so its not a bookshelf speaker but its the same size. Milo edit: The mb20 is the same thing but a little cheaper

Thanks for the links thus far.
I'm a little suprised that there are not many documented Tang Band projects. The specs look nice with a great price tag to follow them. Given the price of the Tang Band drivers I could probably put together a nice floor TMM floor standing pair for about $200. Does anyone have any Tang Band documented projects other than the full range projects projects I have seen? Thanks! |

In no particular order:
zalytron.com partexpress.com madisound.com speakercity.com adireaudio.com and you should get a subscription to AudioXpress (audioxpress.com) which features kits and reviews of kits. I'd also observe that it is not as easy as it used to be to build a kit and have way better sound than a commercial speaker costing the same. Mass production in the Phillipines and China has resulted in some brands offering good sound at very low prices. But if you want to say "I did it" and have something unique, enjoy! |

If you find an appropriate woofer maybe something like the Alegria Isa might fit your bill.
Maybe a few TBīs less would do as well.

As a fact I just sold off my MT,MTM W6-789S using the T6 tweeter from GR.
And the MT ,MTM I am selling off for $150.00 USD for a single MT,and a pair of MTM using the 657S and 25-302S. just to get the money out of parts. here is the responce of the MT.and MTM is very close.I just do not have it on this machine. At 20 plus speakers on the go some things must sell off. Al |
