Has anyong here tried to use or purchase some JM labs drive units:

http://www.focal.tm.fr/gb/compo/index.htm

I really like the sound from some of their professionally made speakers and quite fancy having a go at making my own but using their drive units.

I was thinking about picking one of thier high end models and then creating my own "cloan" including using the same drive units and crossovers (if I can get my hands on the cct diags - anyone help me ??).

Thanks

Mark

There are quite a few designs over at zalytron.com that use focal drivers. I dont think I have ever seen a JM lab clone that uses JM drivers. I have seen a utopia clone which uses some Seas drivers but thats not exactly what your after.

Generally speakers built do not use manufactures xovers, either because thats half the challange of DIY or they are simply not available.

This guy cloned the JM Labs Utopia, which is their second best loudspeaker that they make (second to the Grand Utopia):

If you drop him an e-mail (click the contact link on the webpage), he would probably send you the cabinet dimensions and the crossover plans.

As for how the clone sounds, I have no idea. I wouldn't consider it for a first project.

I would recommend building a kit. If you have are willing to spend the cash, I build the Seas Thor TL kit, which I bought from Madisound:

I built the cabinet myself:

I love the sound of them. The crossover came pre-assembled, and everything was included, except for the cabinet.
