PA horn-loaded midrange cabs question

Does anyone who builds pa speakers know what these type of midrange horn cabinet sound like?

I don't just want sound to travel far but also to be clean and clear too.It's going be used for indoor raves at large warehouses and large gatherings including a few outside events.

Already got the plans from my Eminence speaker book and i'm using the Eminence Delta pro 12's in them.
So need advice whether these type will project the sound further and louder than sealed midrange boxes which i'm used to and think are inefficent for pa use.

they're actually not bad at all we used to use that eminence design ourselves with some normal Delta 12's in them

quite a clear open sound from them that certainly travels well

looks like you'll be better off using the pro version of the 12's as they don't seem to have such an annoying bump in their responce

Mmmm..... old (honky) technology.

The pic looks like 1 12" and 3 15" versions. 15" in mid horn is definite no-no, and the 12" one on the top doesn't seem to be deep enough to have much benefit. With this type of box, a 2" HF driver would be a must as you will be flat out getting much higher than 1.2kHz.

A better design of 12" horn will give greater efficiency and smoother response.

Hi. The flared mid/bass bins work really well for us in our applications up to about 50metres. We have been using old JBL flared 15" cabinets as bass units above our subs. They will work down to below 80Hz with right drivers fitted, and sound and project well up to about 800-1Khz. You gain about 4 to 6dB in efficiency, and in my experience they do not sound honky. Altec, JBL and many others, used this design a lot in the 70s and 80s so they can't be bad. Many of the newer designs using phase bungs etc are brilliant but only if you use exactly the correct original driver. Flared bass cabs tend to be quite happy to run with virtually any driver as they are not operating as compression drivers. The eminence designs are based on very sound principles of simple driver loading with an exponential flare. Some cheaper designs using straight sides to the the flare but this is not good.
