- for 200-800Hz a resistance-side-ported cardioid driver might be optimal, unless one happens to like the dipole airiness...
- multisub approach with closed box subs sounds good for me too, but often it is not a realistic option (cost, WAF, positioning, routing cables etc.)
- a properly functioning cardioid bass unit is less dependant on positioning than other bass types. Also a cardioid bass-mid multiway speaker has most uniform directivity index.
- there are many ways to skin a cat!

depends how much more omni you want it to be.

blanket on sides and rear, more damping on sides it goes more omni
sides all open and 2 folded polyfill? blankets on rear, rear wave damped dipole
