Default hello i'm new and big ol' cabinet questions

hey, i'm ryan, i'm new here...hi

i think i'm in the right forum, if not could you please redirect me to where i should be...

umm i have a few questions and a friend referred me to here...the first involves 4x15 bass amplifer cabinets...aside from me not being able to find them anywhere do the different layouts affect the sound produced...for example, a marshall major is all front loaded (is that the right word?)...it's basically just a 4x12 but bigger...whereas an acoustic 408 is shaped much like that of any other acoustic cab or similar to that of an ampeg 8x10...2 speakers, the top and bottom, are front loaded where the 2 in the middle are facing up and down.

my second question involves the afformentioned ampeg...being one who loves to push air, when i discovered the ampeg v9 9x10 i immediately wanted one...i have a few questions...the 8x10 is a sealed enclosure as far as i can tell...the 9x10 is also fully sealed but there are 6 ports (is that right too?) on the pannel where the speakers are mounted...how will these ports and the extra speaker affect the overall sound...thanks!

<3 ryan

This really should be in the musical instruments forum :

Whatever :

I've seen a 4x15 in 2x2 format, used by a reggae bands bass
player, not exactly a convenient cabinet to lug around as it
was ~ 3'6" x 3'6" x 2'.

Basically 4 x 15 is not a popular format.

Regarding the porting it very much depends on the drivers you
are using, some suit it, some don't, but the ideal drivers for bass
suit having low tuned ports.

As a bass player I can tell you the worlds best cabinet for bass
is a ported 4x12 with good units. The same stacked is bliss.

(I have a stacked 4x10 with a 1x15, but a 4x12 is better)

These 12 " blissful units are PA speakers? or some special instrument speaker?

Hi V,

we are not talking music here, so 12" bass units for bass guitar.

I played once with a Fender 130W valve amp and a Trace Elliot
4x12 bass cabinet (very deep compared to guitar cabs) and it
was the best sound for playing bass I've come across.

I've tried stacked good 4x12's in a shop but couldn't afford it.

sreten.
