There are a couple of famous proponents of the Uber-amp out there. Bob Carver, Roger Sanders (ESL maker) who feel anything under 250 watts distorts. I've never seen evidence to back up their claims that transient peaks are actually much higher than we think they are.

Hi, it depends on the recording. Percussion has hi crest factors. For example, if you sing a song, you can raise crest factor by more than one Bel just by accompanying yourself with finger-snipping. Such digital recording sounds very quiet, compared to most commercial music, when normalized to full-scale. But you can cut off the highest Bel of it, limiting to -10dB, without changing the sound much. In analogue times magnetic saturation ground off these edges, now we can or must be pedantic.
