Default HATT-MkIII= Good first speaker project?

I am thinking of building these speakers and am wondering if anyone has had any experience with them and if they would be good for a beginner speaker builder. I have built a few electronics projects. i.e. Sheldon Stokes' MOSFET headphone amp.

Here is the link to the speakers.

What do you think?

JV.

If you can follow the plans and read the crossover schematic, it should be fine. If you were to design a new crossover, though, I wouldn't recommend using metal cone woofers for a first project (notch filter(s) needed).

I have just build this speaker a few months ago as my second project. This is the first project I am building a speaker alone and doing everything myself. Right now I have started with veneering the speaker. For the money it's a very good speaker.

Here you can find some pictures of how I build them: HATT-mkIII

I have just completed a pair of the HATT- mk II speakers and like them very much. The mk II use Seas drivers and sound quite nice with my Pass Labs a40 amp. I put a switch on the back to engage/bypass the zobel network. The drivers do need a good deal of time to break in and improve a good deal in the first 10 to 20 hours of hard driving. Overall, I spent about $350 on the pair (high quality XO parts) and they sound better than my previous speakers that I purchased for nearly $1000. Placing them up against the wall does accentuate the bass. Haven't yet listened critically for imaging or soundstaging.

I will be preparing a web page to document the project soon...

Default tweeter question

I'm also looking at building a pair of these, and have a question regarding the tweeter. I'm trying to buy everything from Solen, however they don't have the 27TBF/G. They do have the 27TAF/G, and I was wondering if anyone could comment as to whether you think this is a suitable substitution. I've looked at the specs, and they look quite close.
Thanks!
Dave

The Seas 27TAF/G (H882) looks like a perfect alternative. Maybe the series resistor R1 should be a little smaller (like 5,6 or 4,7 ohms) to compensate for the difference in efficiency but otherwise I don't see any "problems".

I've finally gotten around to posting some information about the HATT mkII on my web page. I've got some pictures of the construction process along with some (still incomplete) notes on how I built them and how they sound.

Hi all,
I'm also new to here~
currently I have finished the HATT-MKIII, i would say the sound stage of the unit is really good (use only cheap resistors and PP film cap)! vocal is sweet, bass is tight, not too deep & punch, but is good enough!
hope this help~
