Living the Hi-Fi life at 120db per hour...

Sub bass should be separate and again should be able to move huge amounts of air, and should be able to "load the room".

Scott, i already have 2x 10W7 per side, with plenty of icepower amp to feed them. We're talking about 3550cc of displacement here, that's more than most (if not any) commercially available ''Hi-fi'' speakers. ''load the room'' is not a problem here, trust me. As low as 15hz if needed.

But then again, that's irrelevant because my upcoming project will use a total of 6x 18FH500 which can deliver well over 6000cc.

I'm not worried a single bit about the first 3 octaves.

On the other hand: 5th, 9th and 10th octave might be tricky.
Off-axis 18FH500s + hornless CD ? So far it looks promising, but need to be tested. Hornless 950PBbe with the combo Volt 2500.4/10W7 works like a charm, really. My (positive) surprise of the month.
Will it be the same with the 18FH500 ? I don't know. It should. Easy to test. Will do.

Now, the big question mark: is the tweeter line array will blend good with the hornless CD ? Again: no yellow light so far. Maybe i should go back to a 210-10D (ultra high efficiency ribbon tweeter) or maybe the line array of smaller cheaper ribbons or AMT will do magic... I don't know yet. Experimentations are needed.

This is a well-traveled road, the folks here are already flashing you the yellow lights and posting the roadsigns of high-performance wisdom if you care to read them...

BMS makes good stuff, they have really taken the ring radiator technology to a whole new level of performance.

As far as I can tell if you use a tweeter line array you will need to use a line array for the mids as well. Otherwise nothing will match anywhere.

Given that caring horn designers jump through hoops to eliminate any sharp transition in order to avoid diffraction artifacts it seems ill advised to use a hornless compression driver. A Karlson tube would seem preferable overall.

I'd pick a donut shape with the inner hole transition seamless to the horn exit 🙂
The diameter of the torus could be chosen to counter diffraction at a certain cut off frequency, not a horn, more like a waveguide.

Yes, move some air, but define a focused mid bass !

One of those 18s to 600hz is possible but I don't know about three. Maybe look at a JBL 6200 series for the tops. Or maybe an 18" three way on top of a PPSL pair of BMS 18s for subwoofers.

Yes, agreed. It's part of what I wrote about in my essay; separating out the sub-bass. Also, I must thank you for the tip on that BMS 18, what a monster and a GREAT candidate for ppsl 🙂

Opposed to a line array of mids with a single tweeter ?

I heard that kind of set-up (a member here) and it was excellent. No funny sonic signature or artefact. That it works, no doubt. But the opposite, like i'm about to test? Not sure, indeed.

Worst case scenario, i wire the tweeters mix/parallel taper? (higher impedance bottom & top) so the energy is more focused near the mid ?

the thing that annoys me there is i HAVE to order a ton of tweeters just to make the test, no way to avoid it. Can't even just order enough for one side, i have to listen both side (stereo) to have a good idea. 🙄

The latest settings on my ''test set-up''

Got tons of energy from the hornless 950PBbe but now it's pretty much balanced with the ribbons, midbass and subwoofers...

That being said, can't wait to try with the 6x 18FH500 😱

The 64-10 is surprisingly keeping up, even though he is breaking a little sweat... 🙂

Things are getting more and more clear for my project, in regards to the components that will be used.

Based on that:

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/mult...off-subjective-comparison-34.html#post4927251

- Forssell DAC (how to extract the most from any driver)
- 18FH500 (i don't see any better option as this beast)
- Ribbon tweeters (most likely a line array)
- Hornless Radian 950PB or 950PBbe (stellar from 400hz up to 4.5khz)

Before starting to build the enclosures, all i really need is to test the 18FH500 in sealed box, then pair it with the hornless Radian to see if it works good. Then, of course, the deciding which tweeter route to take.

Starting the Line Array experimentations with the tweeters...

Not really a line array yet, but i only have 6 of them on hand. Already very interesting, i like it. 🙂
Fills the space more than all tweeters i tried as of yet. Nothing weird or that feels wrong. Stereo 3D-imaging is very impressive.

Already good with AMT's, can't wait to try with ribbons...

I found the horn-less CD idea interesting but with your tweeter line-array idea, I am totally lost....

🙂

That's only experimentation i'm doing right now.

I have no choice, i wouldnt want to spend many hours building something without making thorough tests before.

Better to try it on some wood planks before making the final choices. So far, i really like the group of tweeters. Works great, no downside that i can hear. I kind of miss the RAAL's upper-end, but the stereo imaging is awesome.

I'm just unsure about the center-to-center optimum distance. Again: not easy to compare unless you have tons of tweeters to play with...

Complete change of plan.

Long story short, i made some tests today with a single 18FH500 v.s. 2x 10W7, all in sealed boxes with agressive EQ corrections on the first octave, as i always do.

The Faital just can't compete against the JL audio's. Despite that, on paper, it should. Not only i measured in-room SPL differencial as high as 14db (!) in the 20-30hz region, with pure tones, but it feels very different to the ears. The JL audio is delivering some sort of effortless performance that is always welcome. No struggle, no drama, just the air moving at the frequency it should move it.

Sooo... Change of plan. Return to the 4-way config. Yup. Cannot escape the 4-way it seems....
Separate subwoofers with probably a quad 12W6v3 or such...

And now, since i don't have to push the mid/woofer that low, i'll probably forget about the 18FH500 and go back to my first idea: 15PR400.

Here's the curves:

12PR300 is a nice low/mid driver Faital Pro put a lot of engineering work into their cones, I built a decent sounding 2-way monitor with it. Using AVR bass management high pass @ 90 Hz keeps excursion very low at war volume, 2 sets of ear pro are required when feeding it 150v p-p.

Yeah, somewhere in this thread, I do believe that SOMEBODY suggested going with a separate solution for deep bass.Later on in this very same thread, I believe there was another somebody who suggested that there existed quite a few somebodies who offered you sage advice, but I will admit, it's difficult to separate all the somebodies apart from one another. That, takes time and a lot of reading.
