Default Coworker looking at Bestbuy Speakers, recommend PartsExpress.

A coworker was looking JBL's and stuff over at bestbuy.com and of course noticing I'm looking at stereo stuff all night asked me what I thought.

I asked him what he liked and he said rap, so heres what I recommended. Mostely casual listening also.

Bookshelfs; Peerless/Morel kit for fronts...actually he recommneded those, cause they were nicer than the BR-1's.

For surround, the BR-1's.

Then for the big bertha the 10" Titanic Sub Kit.

Then just a regular Onkyo or Pioneer surround reciever and 5 Disc DVD player.

Now I know this isn't heavenly bliss, and lord knows I would have screamed Maggies, but in this particular application high end isn't needed, and I feel these will be better than any $600 JBL towers.

I think the Monitors should be able to handle rap especially if I add a highpass at 100-150Hz or so. And the amplifier in the Titannic will be much better quality than most recievers (as far as dishing the bass and still handeling the rest) and better driver than the JBL's.

And then the nice $99 metal stands they sell for the fronts.

To be honest I think I would really enjoy this system <- when I deliver it

Course I offered to build them , since I got some experience and all !

Personally I would use some cheapo vinyl floor tiles to damp
the 12mm cabinets. Others have added some bracing.

Your referring to the BR-1's? I'm sure some dowels and Liquid Nails would be helpfull.

Also would it be better to upgrade to poly-fill rather than the foam it comes with? I would think yes....

Don't they both use the same cabinet ?

No. Not for a bass reflex. Foam is better than Polyfill, but as
your using them in a HT setup presumably set to small then
additionally adding Polyfill stuffing is an option.

The BR-1s excel in deep bass for their size, and struggle somewhat in the midrange. Wall mounted, they have too much bass for my tastes (this happens when a speaker designed with Baffle Step correction is mounted on wall), but my teenage kids like it. While not big rap fans, most of todays popular music has the bass jacked up anyway. The BR1s are also rather inefficient. While 8 ohms, it does need a bit of amp to drive at decent levels. For surround use, you won't be playing on the BR-1 strengths, and effeciency might not be an issue, if located relatively close.

Don't know much about the Peerless/Morel kit. I do like my Peerless HDS for providing decent detail, without making most of my older classic rock recordings, unlistenable. I don't understand the 50 watt rating on these. Maybe a typo, but check with PE. Their low efficiency with only a 50w limit (if true), could be a problem.

If you are considering a center speaker, the Peerless/Morel might be an issue, not being shielded. I think the BR-1 can come with shielded drivers now. If you go BR1 center, might as well go BR-1 all around. Just will need a good driving receiver. Running BR-1s fullrange, you will want a receiver that puts out an honest 70W channel. I have an older Onkyo 575X that would do fine with them. I would expect its current level model would be OK.

The sub is probably OK for smallish rooms. If you can move up to a 12", all the better. You could consider using the 12"DVC in the sealed 2 cuft or 3ft vented cabinet, driven by the 250w amp.
