I'm totally new to this DIY stuff. Please bear with this newbie.
I want to build a subwoofer (wow, how original) and pretty much the only reasonable drivers I can find are these: 1. KEF B139 plus a matching passive radiator 2. Shiva MkIII The price for both units is the same. Which would be the best choice, and in what enclosure? Thanks! |

Utterly no contest, at all.
The B139 does not make a good sub, especially a PR one. I can't find the Mkiii specs as yet but I be very surprised if they were not vastly more suited to a sub. will keep you posted, but I believe the Shiva suits around a 50L sealed box and a 100L to 150L reflexed / vented box. Just can't find the parameters. |

KEFs are used in the Perfectionist Audio subwoofer and a number of other respectable designs, that's why I didn't dismiss this unit out of hand. All of them are TL designs without the PR though (but then there's always an option to ditch the PR...)

Shiva MkIV specs shouldn't be different from the MkIII.

Maybe 'cuz it's the same design based on the Fried Model H sub. |

http://homepage.mac.com/tlinespeaker...139B_newer.gif I don't think its much of a contest. Details of designs and boxes for the shiva can be found here : http://www.adireaudio.com/tech_papers/shiva_apps.htm |

The shivas xmax is more then four times the kefs, alsmost 5 times! I know that old kef driver is/was highly regarded, but nowadays it just cant keep up.
