Hi then_dude,
I happen to have three pairs of Saba Greencones (5928, the round ones) and measured them (and actually listened to them also...). From memory the specs are about as follows: fs around 75 Hz, qms ~8, qes ~1.2, qts over 1 (that counts for all 8" Sabas regardless of magnet shape/manufacturer), mms ~8g, re ~4ohms. Anyway those specs are not really helpful for designing a suitable enclosure.......imo Sabas should be run in OB's but there's people who have tried different solutions. Some even put them in reflex enclosures which should result in a fairly big hump around 100Hz....not my cup of tea. People have build clones of the Rondo (originally equipped with PHY-HP chassis)....but again: put them in an Open Baffle of , say 120 x 60cm, offset from the center slightly and enjoy! As for tweeters I am running vintage Saba tweeters coupled with 2r2, 2.2uf and 0.09mH, sounds very good. Resolution of those old paper cones is truly amazing!! Since you won't have a lot of real bass with light cones in an OB you can use a subwoofer below 80Hz or so, I am using a closed DIY-sub with good result. An option would of course be trying a dipole subwoofer, especially the Ridthaler variation a la Audioelevation Attac 400. In case you want to know a bit more AND struggle with german, have a look at "http://www.jogis-roehrenbude.de/LS-Box.htm" or "www.audiotreff.de", all in german though....... Later Oliver PS Vintage Telefunken speakers are even better than the Sabas in my opinion, and there's much more out there....... |

i`m running saba`s too.
i heard a couple 8" variations with and own a 9" with a ferite magnet. all have been placed in an open baffle the 8 inchers tend to honk. there is a nasty peak around 6-8k... fortunately, i have not heard it on my 9". my baffle is 12" and the bass goes down to about a 100hz. i`m augmenting it with a sealed 12" that brings this figure down to about 35hz. its quite enjoyable. if you are looking for vintage heaven, try looking for the vintage altecs or WECO ones. i heard a altec 755 recently and was surprised by its speed in the bass and the level of detail. just a word of advice, you need a tweeter. even with the altecs which go up to 14k, a tweeter crossing in at 20k helps alot especially with the cymbals. |

hello guys,
i would certainly use it as an open baffle, (i mean the saba) and with a tweeter and open baffle woofer. i have looked at the telefunken too. so thanx for the advice. But if they have a nasty jump in the 6khz range, that isn''t good; so maybe i'm buying a telefunk thanx |

then_dude,
in my setup the breakup resonance around 7kHz of the Saba's didn't result in a nasty (or honky) sound, they are just a little bit more forward than the TFK's. But much more important to me was that my Telefunkens (8" Alnico without dustcap, there's many different ones) are imaging much better and are much better in the lower mids where the Saba's are a bit muddled(?). The 9-inch Saba's that hacknet is using could also be an option. Scanning Ebay.com gives you a good choice, there's a guy from Germany selling vintage fullrange stuff (Saba, Loewe, Telefunken, Siemens, Greatz etc) every once in while...... |

i`ve heard the 8'' one with and without the dustcap, i`ve also heard the 5298 (permadyn 19) and the permadyn 25 in is various variations.
the 9'' i`m refering to is the 5898. the 8" honk quite badly in some cases. the worst case being the dustcaped permadyn 25. the dustcapless one did alittle better. these sound more dynamic, airy and more lively compared to the klangfilm i heard. i also realised that the baffle placement makes a big difference. i hope this would help you make up your mind. |

then_dude,
I can't comment on small oval Saba's and TFK since I haven't heard them........but I'd stay away. The big oval Saba's are said to be good though, one could even mount the tweeter coaxial.(see pix...that was like it came from the factory!) For round Telefunkens just see what you can get, they can be pricey though..... |

I had a pair of 0val 12"x8" Isophons, which are nearly identical to the Telefunkens. I had them in 12ft long mass loaded Voight pipes and they sounded really good. They had helper tweeters which were crossed in at an amazingly high frequency (trial and error, so couldn't say exactly). No peakeeness to speak of. The Voights present little resistance to the drivers, but take the bass right down to sub-bass levels. The bass is not terrably detailed, but its there, and suprisingly good. I was very happy with them until I fried the drivers with my latest VBIGC project. Seriously thinking about getting replacement drivers to restore the Voights.
Anyone got any useful advise on Red Isophons, because I have seen a pair, but they are only rated up to 5K, which is very low for Isophon drivers. Shoog |

Another very good Greman driver to look out for, is the RFT/Schulze KSP 215K. Did a comparison the other day with the Saba Permadyne 25 , the KSP 215 was much superior in the lower midrange . Btw there was also just a recent thread on the RFT drivers do take a look.
