There are a few thing you need to wind "perfectly laid" windings. You need:tktran said:
- A solid bobbin of the appropriate size to wind on.
- Some method for turing the bobbin
- Something to feed and straighten the wire (usually good strong, cramp proof hands)
- Enough wire
- Goobs of patience
It really not worth it unless you have access to a winding machine and wire.

thank you for your reply. i have access to enamelled wire, however not a winding machine.
how is the perfect lay winding process similar or different to normal inductor winding by hand? (ie. backwards and forwards on the bobbin)
I think i can picture the layout of the coil but am not sure how to wind it.

The term "Perfectly Lay" refers only to the regularity (or neatness) of the winding on the coil (see below). You can do this youself but its not easy. It's hard to keep enough tension on the wire through 200 or 300 turns and make sure every wind is in the right line. For air core inductors it make very little difference if the windings are perfectly laid or not. Personally I wound the inductors for my first x-over and it worked fine. Now I buy my inductors.
