Over the years I browsed some audio gatherings
looking for decent DESIGNS (electronics & speakers). But, 9 out of 10 speakers on a (presumably High-End) Show don't interest me - just sound...no music. The speakers that DO sound OK are horn-loaded and have strict controlled off-axis radiation patterns. > Visaton Monitor890MkII, Amphion series and the like. The former is nice looking, high efficient but too big for my room. My 300B-SE tube amp is only about 7W and now it seems I must use my older (SE-transistor) AMP, buy a modified Amphion speaker and start Bi-Amping. Too bad. Anyone of you has the same problem finding great sounding, affordable (DIY) speakers for GTA? - Great Tube Amps Anyone has experience with Amphion on low-power GTA? Groet, Eric. |

I suggest you post on the Full Range Driver website. There are many members there that live in Europe and Asia where tube amps are very popular and they have many wonderful design ideas.

Thanks for the tip Tim(?) , I will have a decent look over there.
Have some experience with fullrange designs though. Been listening to various Lowther/Fostex things via our own dutch Lowther-guru Bert Doppenberg and others. But, as mentioned before, still 9 out of 10 (fullrange or whatever) don't communicate to my taste. I have some Fostex horns lying around (PA stuff) maybe there's a decent and cheap solution to my prob'. Say, nice cat you have. (S)he's the inverse of my own pet. Tica has all the whites where your cat is dark Groet, Eric. P.S. Amps are of No-Overall-Feedback type which makes a good speaker match somewhat harder too (it seems)

They have a very nice reference line with a horn tweeter.
It is a fairly new serie differrent to the older models. I have the RF-3 myself. There not huge but do sound that way I have been modifieing them quite a bit and am VERY hapy with them. They should work perfect with tubes. Very powerfull and detailed and very good imaging (after mods) They can let you hear ANY change you do to the source/amps/wiring. I have been wondering about BD's horn with 150Hz cutoff. Have you heard those? What dont you like about them? Coolin. |

Coolin haai,
I had some doubt about Bert's fronthorns mainly because of the forwarded sound. If have heard some demo's but choose NOT to buy those guys because: 1) Offensive looking toeters (don't know the eng. word) 2) Too bright in the higher-mid band 3) Poor off-axis frequency response 4) Getting more and more expensive (damn Lowther!) - some things were off course VERY good too.... At the last session one person started demonstrating with a different setup: Single-ended tubeamp, 1mm Ag speakercables and SonusFaber Extrema speakers -> AAAHh!! MUSIC. Klipsch. Know these only from pictures and some reviews. The past years I've been wondering If there WILL EVER BE a speaker that has 'widening' pressure response with rising frequency. So: low freq. are narrow and high freq. wide. This is said by a (sound) engineer which I read some decade ago (mr. Han - published in some dutch audio magazine). I tell you all this because a large room with Basshorns is still my idealistic favourit (and a must acording to Han). Two woofers tend to focus and therefor give some 'drive' to lower notes. If the Klipsch you mention work with a basshorn or occupy two (or more -inline) woofers ... I am interested Say, dutchie, maybe you know a cheap address for iridium/ rhodium cinch plugs? Audio Home in Eindhoven discontinued accessoires and can't give info on the importeur. Maybe VLS? Groet, Eric. |

If you want to build your own high sensitivity sound system
to be driven by a low powered tube amplifier, try this. Tweeter - 13 ohms, 103db http://www.wbvbeheer.nl/wbvportal/st...es/pdf62en.pdf Midrange - 8 ohms, Audax PR170M0, PHL 1120, PHL 2520, PHL 3450. (sensitivity 97db - 101db depending on which one). www.phlaudio.com Woofers - Best to bi-amp and run a high powered solid state amplifier for low pass 300hz.
