Slot loading versus tuned port

There are two types of vents: rectangular (slot) and round. What are the advantages of the slot over the round?

I assumed the only advantage a slot port had is that it will have more port area for the size it takes up i guess.

Yes, an advantage is more efficient use of space (within a rectangular space), but I think it actually weakens the enclosure, and moreso than the circular port. Think about it: one side of the slot will (normally) be a piece of wood hanging from one side of the cabinet, and you can't support it because then it'll block air coming out. Well, a slot port does look slick; just take a look at PSB's new Platinum series speakers (www.psbspeakers.com).

With a round port is often much easier to change the tuning, if needed. When you have a slot you have to do some major woodwork to "retune"

Easier slot loading?

Are there any commercially available plastic slot ports? I know Parts Express carries a triangular port, but that is even harder to tune (and mount). But if anybody's interested, here's a link:
