Pros and cons of different midbass horns

Purely subjective rambling incoming...

I built a pair of Inlow's 135hz mid-bass horns a few years ago, single 8pe21 per horn version. I built them quick and dirty as a prototype to see if I liked them enough to build a 'final' version. Well, they were so damn good I had unfinished mid-bass horns in the living room system for a few years. They are quite remarkable in their band. I used them from ~150hz - ~600hz.

He also has a design that gets down closer to 100hz:

DIY 100hz midbass horn - The Paper Horn by Inlow Sound

And some other horns there on his site as well. I suspect the 12" version sounds equally good in it's band, but haven't built any myself.

The 135hz horn isn't too long and is easier to fit into a room. I'm very lucky that I have a very large living room and can tolerate even longer mid-bass horns. So, I'm building some much larger ones at some point. Very much in the simulating and contemplating phase now, might build a very quick and dirty prototype to test in the garage late this year.

useless anecdotal subjectivity complete.... :D

Cheers,
Gable

Have you built it yet?

Hello,

As I am using a 3 way and cutting the mids between 300 and 2500 I am more thinking of a waveguide than a horn...
So just maybe to control a little bit dispersion and diffraction...
I think something like that would be ok, too bad it has guide for a 1" horn as I use 34mm or 30mm tweeter (audax tw34 or wavecor tw30a12)

Yeah maybe just a kind of guide with concentric circles sanded or plastered would be doable...

I see, so you want a device which works more at the higher frequencies and disappears at lower frequencies. If you do this you might be able to make the woofer act like it is larger than it is.

I'm not sure what you'd expect with diffraction. Is there some that is a problem or are you just suggesting?

I am playing with BC 6md38 wide open baffle and waveguided tweeter. Woofer for the time being beyma 12b100r bass reflex.

I like it, I think 165mm drivers are great on a lot of aspects. Maybe a small waveguide with no compression would smooth the response and make it less dependent from position...
What do you think of limmerhorns anyway?
