Default Newbie looking for suggestions

I want to make my fist venture into the DIY world and have a couple of thoughts, but just wanted to get the opinions of some more experienced DIY'ers.

Basically, what I'm looking for is a small bookshelf speaker to be used in a bedroom setting. I would like the kit to be very simple. I'm thinking assembled crossovers and cabinets would probably be a good thing for my first time.

I would like the kit to around $700 (or preferably less). I have discovered three kits that seem to meet my needs and seem to be highly acclaimed. First is the GR-Research AV1. I have read a lot about this speaker on audioasylum, and it seems everyone who has heard it loves it. I haven't been able to find as much information on the other two kits: the North Creek Music Okara, and the Besl 1.2. The North Creek really intrigues me because it seems to use very high quality components for a reasonably priced set of loudspeakers.

So what do you guys think? Which of these three kits do you think would be best? Are there any others that I have missed? Thanks for your time and your feedback!

$700 is a lot to spend on a 1st project (most find thay can't build just one, so best to save some cash for project #2 ).

Have a look at this thread

diyAudio reference speaker project

Myself i like mostly full-range systems. A couple Fostex FE103s, maybe some helper tweeters, and use the money you save to build a sub.

The Solo 103 is an example that might fill your needs.

Thanks for the suggestions. You're right...$700 is a nice chunck of change. That's why I have been leaning towards the GR Research AV1 because its a good amount cheaper than the other two. Thanks again for your reply.
