What are the key characteristics that need attention when matching speakers for a project?

Do you mean what internal components should have priority in a matching-pair exercise, or how to match up fronts/centre/surround/sub in an HT system?

For instance, when choosing a tweeter to use with a 6.5 inch woofer in a 2-way speaker, what are the key parameters to ensure they will work well with each other? Obviously more is involved after the selection of speakers, but the initial selection is what I am looking for.

2 obvoius ones are that the range of each needs to overlap -- the more the better (so you can use a simpler XO) and the tweeter should as sensitive (ideal) or more sensitive (will need padding).
