Open Baffle Driver
Default Open Baffle Driver

Is there such a thing as an open baffle driver? What I mean is are there generally agreed on parameters that make a driver well suited to open baffle use? I as looking at the LX521 and it seems to use stiff cone, long throw with huge magnets structures is that a good way to go?

I'm looking specifically for a midbass to bridge the gap between a Peerless 12" in a sealed enclosure and a large Heil on top. 8 ohm between 250 and 2500 hz

Getting down to 250 Hz on an OB does not require anything special from the driver, the dipole cancellation will be below that unless you run the driver "naked" (baffleless). You need to find a driver that will cover the midrange up to 2500 nicely, and play loudly enough at 250 to suit your needs. Try playing around with The Edge software and the xbaffle spreadsheet (Google can find them if you don't have them) and you'll see what will work, and what baffle shape will give you the smoothest response.

I'd worry more about keeping up with the Heil than about hitting 250.

Insert witty signature line here.

On 250hz side it's pretty easy and there are many options like any 8" woofers. Seas, Scanspeak, Vifa, SBAcoustics. Choose one with low Fs and high xmax.

But on the 2.5khz that's where it's problematic. Any rigid cone even the expensive W22 has a breakup at 5khz and this will be audible, not to mention the non-flat response by that freq. I think it is not practical. You need to go 4-way and insert a soft-cone 5" woofers.

That's why for 3-ways the Orions are what they are, with 1.5khz M-T xo. It's a set of design compromises /choices.

May be one of these will work for you:

FaitalPRO 8PR200 8" Neodymium Professional Woofer 8 Ohm | 294-1175

Click the image to open in full size.

Or if you are going to be using it to below baffle-step point, two of the 16-ohm versions in parallel:

FaitalPRO 8PR200 8" Neodymium Professional Woofer 16 Ohm | 294-1176

I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it.

The 8" is a bit expensive for this speaker. What about this one?

FaitalPRO 6FE100 6" Professional Woofer 8 Ohm | 294-1150

Fs 61 hz and Xmax of 5.25mm
