Default Help with Tannoy Dual Concentrics?

Hi Folks

A good mate has got some old 8" Tannoy drivers, (pics below). They need full recones, and unfortunately the crossovers are mising as well. Anyone recognise them? Model numbers would be handy for sorting out recone kits.

Thanks in advance

Default Tannoy units

Hi there,

Give Falcon acoustics a call they have a company called DC Boultons which is part of Falcon Acoustics. They recone loudspeakers and specialise in larger units like the tannoys.Ive just got all 4 bass units in my Kef 105.3 re foamed by them and they are perfect and they offer a great service.

Here's a link for them

Falcon might even be able to help you out with the crossover aswell.

Hope this helps

They look like Tannoy SGM-8 speakers.

Try Tom at www.speakerbits.com.au as he might be able to supply factory surround components. He's done a couple of mine previously (15"- ers) and the workmanship was excellent (absolute gent and very knowledgable/professional too). Either he, or someone on the Yahoo Tannoy group might be able to tell you the UK supplier and xover info too. Even if you have to import them from Oz, they're small and postage won't cost much.

It's unlikely that you'll need to replace the cones, just the surrounds. If you do the lot with non-factory bits, they wont be Tannoys any more.

The horn in all the older Tannoys is a CD type and needs FR compensation for falling response at higher F's. The hard part will be the tapped inductor/autoformer, but if you have some measuring gear, you'll be able to select a single one to work.

I've never actually seen a pair of 8" before; they're something I'd like to try in an Oris/Azura type horn.

Hi Brett,

Sounds great. But where to find Tannoy DC’s? Tannoy does not sell separate units so you have to rely on spares.

But they do sell these:

They come complete with a high quality x-over. I’ve put these in a 20L closed box. But a back-loading horn ...

Cheers

Plastic cones and non-compression driver tweeter? Thanks, but I'll pass and wait for some of the others to show up on ebay. I bet the Qes is all wrong for a horn too.

I meant in a front loaded horn. I don't like backloads.

Ok I see afterall this is not the best sounding Tannoy I've heard. This is what I measured:

Thanks Guys

The reason that we were thinking of full recones is that some of the drivers have been "repaired" previously, and cleaning up the originals might be more bother than it is worth...

The tweeter seems to be the standard pepperpot variant, with a 2" VC, so that should be easy enough to find. As for the Xovers, I am aware of the falling response problem, and if I have anything to do with it, the system will be active, with the fall off electronically corrected. Using them in a horn sounds interesting, however with only a 8" mid, they may well need some extra help at the bottom, after all, even the 12"s never went super low!
