I've been lurking the board for a few months and have figured out some of the acronyms, and just assumed some, but others I have no clue about.
Would someone mind filling in the blanks for me? It may help others, browsing, still trying to learn as well. Trying to squeeze info from these threads into my skull aint easy when the topic is a ML-TQWT, and you cant get a mental picture of what the heck it is.... :] M - mid T - tweeter Q - ? W - ? B - ? (B) - ? TL - Transmission Line ML - ? List others if you would, for future reference. Thanks |

Unfortunately, most of these are ambiguous and need context. Here's a go:
M- can mean "midrange" or "mass." T- normally tweeter Q- can mean directivity factor or quality factor. Quality factor, confusingly enough, has nothing to do with quality, but is the inverse of damping. W- usually woofer, sometimes a shortcut for omega, which is 2pi*frequency B- magnetic field strength

Way back when, quarter wavelength (1/4WL) pipes tuned to Fs were called acoustic labyrniths (AL). Later, someone chose to call their design a transmission line (TL), while others picked tuned quarter wave pipe (TQWP) or tuned quarter wave tube (TQWT).
A vented variant of these was called 'column', or 'tower', designs. Recently, Martin King did some research to allow modeling of these and labeled the result a mass loaded pipe, or ML-TQWT. Having been designing/building tower designs since the late '60s, and never doing one that was anywhere near a 1/4WL of Fs or Fb, I began referring to them as ML-TLs since technically a TL doesn't define a specific WL, and it better defines the design than 'column' or 'tower'. Note that these can be straight, positive or reverse tapered, and folded to reduce height. GM

ML-TQWT => Mass loaded tapered quarter wave tube
MTM => Midrange tweeter midrange => sometimes d'Apollito, sometimes not.
