Based on published data, I have been comparing the C173-6-191E and the C158-8-085. Which would you choose and why? I don't want this to be a buy a Scan Speak instead discussion...I'm really interested in the merits of each versus the other.

Best,

Best,

I would not operate any of these drivers below 100 Hz.

For the range 100-3,000 Hz, the C173-6-090 would be my choice.

This is not easy both are great drivers. However the c158 seems more advanced. accuton uses Klippel speaker testing system which is a great feedback source. The BL product was worked on to make the speaker more linear. How ever I have not heard the c158. Have you listen to both?

I am using the C158-8-085.

Pro's;
1) Boy is it crystal clear at really high volume's. I don't want to say that I occasionally drink a glass or two too many red wine, but geeeeeeeze, you've not heard anything like this driver. Imagine electrostatic clarity, but with dynamics to die for. The performer is in the room with you, but you can't talk to the person beside you, you have to yell!!!!.
2) It can be crossed a little higher. I tried a few C173's in my prototype's, and they do not like anything above 2500Hz (yes they had the cutout's). My Accuton diamond tweeter's didn't like anything approaching 2500Hz, and I didn't want to blow them up (remember, red wine + rock = not good for wallet). YOU are going to use the 'cell' tweeter. This can be crossed lower, so you don't need the added extension of the C158.
3) READ CAREFULLY - No Multi-Strand wire allowed. NONE. There was a definite 'grain' with multi-strand wire. Use only single core. YES, a Teflon sheathed wire sounds better than anything else. Good golley is this driver smooooooooth.
4) If you have a 'balanced' power supply, B-P-T or Equi=tech or home made, for your source components, then you will be in heaven. Without, the driver will clearly play the gunk coming from your wall sockets, it is that good,........, or should I say that bad.

Con's;
1) My C158-8-085 is a little light below 500Hz. I would hope you are porting your midrange. I have it in a sealed cab..
2) If CD's are your primary 'source', stay away. I have the EMM Labs CDSA se. It is one of the best. If 75% of the CD's I own sound terrible, but SACD sounds amazing, and my vinyl rig blows SACD's away, make sure your source is musical. The Accutons will show the deficiency of the CD medium.
3) Did I mention multi-strand wire and clean power to your components.
4) The fill you use in your cabinets is crucial. The diaphragm of the Accuton is sooooooo light, back reflections are amplified. My final fill was the green sound proofing insulation you buy for your home, I think it's Roxul.

The Accuton's demand that everything before them is perfect. If you have a vinyl rig, you will be able to adjust Azimuth, VTA, VTF, and alignment easily. It will 'scream' when you've got it wrong. Did I mention most average CD's are unlistenable?.

If you are able to build your own interconnects, DON'T use the big bulky metal connector housings. For RCA connections: Eichmann or WBT nextgen, XLR: el cheapo Neutrik silver coated. For gosh sake throw away the metal housings. (experiment for yourself). The Accuton is that revealing.

Happy motoring.

With the exception of a slightly light midbass, I own the greatest speakers on the planet.

My apologies. I was a little over the top with that last post.

CD's don't sound unlistenable. What I really mean to say is that you won't get that 'the band is in the room with you' feeling.

Hope I didn't deter you from these fabulous drivers. The better the signal you feed them, the better your speakers will sound.
