Hello all, im new to DIY audio and am looking at the audax DIY home theater set from Solen. I was thinking of building the L/C/R first and then a set of rears using the L/R plans. Couple questions though:
1. is there bipole surround speaker based on this kit? if not, i will go ahead with building the rears using the front L/R plans. 2. i will be running a rotel 1095 THX Ultra amplifier and 995 (?) Rotel THX Ultra processor. will my setup go to waste with the audax set? 3. research on this set tells me i should go for a different sub then the audax. can anyone suggest something? a traditional cube with a 12 incher would be preferable unless there is something else radically better performing that i should consider. 4. how will this setup compare to say. . . b&w cdm-1nt and matching center? if everything works out, i'd also like to build a killer set 2 way towers for 2ch listening. :P TIA! |

I built the Audax L/C/R speakers last Dec. I kept a set of Energy speakers for the surrounds and the rear channel. I also built a 15" subwoofer in an 18" tube that stands a little over 72" tall and is tuned to 17hz. I am remodeling my basement HT and hope to be finished by Jan, 2004. The Audax center channel is a behemoth and weighs almost 50lbs. With the sand-filled tilted stand I built, it is probably 100lbs. Mine sits on the floor under a 16:9 screen. If you want to place it on top of a TV set, be warned again that it is LARGE. Even the L/R speakers are fairly large and weigh about 40lbs each. I built stands to get the tweets at ear level. For the price, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Make sure that you get the correct crossover schematic. The one on the Audax site is incorrect. I bought the kit from Madisound and they preassembled the crossover the correct way. I also got upgraded components for $10-20 more.
The subwoofer sits behind the curtains on each side of my screen and will literally shake the house. For my sub, I used a Dayton 15" DVC and a PE 250w amp. I know another DIYer who built the same sub but used the Adire Tempest woofer and a PE 250w amp. If you elect to build a cylinder sub: You'll need to purchase a cylindrical concrete form from a concrete supply shop. The home improvement stores don't sell them this large. Also, they only come in 12ft lengths. Take an appropriately sized saw and a large vehicle. I used a Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed and it looked like two jet engines in the rear. You'll pay anywhere from $65-100 for the tube. But you can build two very large subwoofers ![]() The Adire stuff is also very good and I believe the Kit281 uses Audax tweeters. Both the Shiva and Tempest subs are awesome. To equal the Audax system, you'd have to spend $2500 IMO
