Default Hey, A good <$250 Project

Hey, im new to the boards and am planning on building a pair of speakers for my relatively small bedroom. I have a pretty good setup (transport, DAC) that i use for headphones, but do not have and amp/preamp or integrated yet.... I a planning on purchasing/building the amp based on the speakers i will build...

In my speakers, i want the music to be alive and visceral without having to spend over $250 on components, ( i can make the enclosure). I have looked @ several options prior to posting. These include small, cheap Tangband fullranges, a MTM from this url: http://home.new.rr.com/zaph/audio/audio-speaker10.html . I will be using the speakers to listen to mainly techno, so soundstaging and bass are important. This is one of the reasons i have shied away from the Tangbangs, could anyone enlighten me on this particular issue

Well thats about it, ill give a future thanks to all the posters...

Thanks

for that price it gets tough

here's a smaller design- http://www.partsexpress.com/projects...ayton_iii.html

here's a bigger floor stander-probably better for techno- http://www.wadsnet.com/~dtenney/dayton_8MTM.htm

if you could go for $300 check these- http://www.gr-research.com/performer/av1plus.htm

audax front channels at madisound- http://www.madisound.com/audaxhometheater.html

vifa a/v kit- http://www.madisound.com/vifa_av.html
and another version(bigger)- http://www.madisound.com/bigavkit.html

there are some cheaper single woofer 2 ways around -but for techno I think you'd be happier with an MTM design-probably the bigger the better if space allows

So the Big A/V kit from vifa would be a good bet? JW, but why does it cost less than the smaller vifa A/V kit ? i have space in my room for any of those, and am going to listenning to them mostly while i'm in bed, watching a movie on a projector screen or something.

I wouldn't be too quick to discount the Tangbands for a small room application. Check out the ELF 1.5 from Creative Sound . I coupled a pair of these with an 8" Sonotube sub and it sounds pretty darn nice.

The TBs are a candidate for what i'd recommend... a small biploar full-range system with a pr of woofers/subs. This allows upgrading bit by bit by just improving the various bits.

4 x TB W3-871S is about $50 + post
You can get a reasonable sub amp from ApexJr for as little as $25 bucks each + postage, leaving about $100 for woofers.

There are lots of woofers to choose from, but to save post you could look at the ApexJr 8" subs for $70/pr or better yet the VIFA P22WP-01s they have -- 4 for $110 (this could be used push-push and would blend better with the FRs)

Hmm i think im starting to like the idea of using the TBs with a sub... It seams that they would offfer more flexibility in upgrading bit by bit like planet10 said. The concept of using 2 subs is somewhat foreign to me, how would these be placed in relation to the TBs? Also is the ELF 1.5 enclosure the best candidate for a pair of TBsm or are there better options for this approach?

Thanks for all the help so far guys.

Near the TBs -- could even be used as stands.

Depends on your room... with a sub i'd build a bipolar push-push sealed box sized to provide an inherent roll-off at the XO point (and then maybe i'd make it aperiodic to flatten the impedance and lower the pressure)... or build a little TL. You do need to be able to pull the sats out from the wall at least a little bit to support this.

The Elf 1.5 with the 0.5 driver on the front has that driver rolling out of phase with main driver which will degrade the overall performance. (of course if you move the 0.5 driver to the back you eliminate the problem)

Default Bipolar W3-871S TQWT

Dave,
I recall a thread where you suggested building a Martin King style bipolar ML-TQWT with the RS 40-1197. The W3-871S looks to be a good candidate also. Did you ever build it? You also mentioned butting the magnets together. This would mean a very shallow cabinet. I'm having trouble visualizing how this would come together. Can you elaborate? I hope I'm still on subject and not hijacking the thread.
