I just built myself some new monitors for my hardware synth studio. Nothing too posh, the only analog is a korg MS10.
I do PA rentals for a living, so not new to speakers, but I got fed up with constantly dragging bassbins & tops in & out of the house, or using other speakers & not being happy, so I built these. like a PA condensed into one box.
The bass cone is a 12" Ciare SW12.00, which I've always loved in reflex, but it's not really efficient enough for PA use.
The midrange is a 10"PHL cone, from France, that they modified for me to become a duel concentric cone, and built the connector piece, especially for the tweeter. It's a really tight midrange, with a flat foam surround, and xmax of less than 1mm. Important i think, for a duel concentric, as I reckon the cone modulation messes up the tweet. Flat surround might also minimize any edge diffraction stuff, but I'm only guessing.
10" cone up to 3KHz gets quite directional, but I reckon that's good, as it minimizes relections. ideal for monitoring.
The tweeter is one of the nitride coated titanium 1.4" compression drivers from 18sound in Italy. Above 3KHz, I reckon it's better than beryllium, and I used to run TAD4001's.
The box is bi-amped, so theres a substantial passive crossover in there between the mid & top. Separate mid compartment, of course.
The baffle is shaped to minimise edge diffraction, and provide a bit of a curve on the grill, to give it structural strength without the need for grill supports in the middle.
Flip handle on the top, and cut out with internal box at the bottom of the rear panel, for a comfortable carrying position.
M10 threads for hanging them off eye bolts, if required.
All analog processing & class AB amps.
I've loaded them up & tested them (very happy) and am now about to carpet cover them with Spectropile carpet (100% made out of recycled plastic bottles!) as I reckon that helps dampen panel resonance, and makes them un-scratchable.
Should be carpeting them tomorrow, so I'll put up some finished photos too.
The spectrum analyzer is showing the response of the ciare SW12.00 without any filters, on the Klarke Tekniks 'savage' setting of 1dB per LED.
nice curve with plenty of 40Hz, peak at 63Hz. the 250Hz 'lump' smooths off with the active 220Hz crossover point.
The other curve on the bassbox plot is an 18sound cone I tried, which is much louder, but not as subby, or smooth.
I'll be crossing it over at 200/220 odd. I'll put up the complete response & with mid & high when it's done.

I sit on the floor close to the speakers and listen to classical music.
The soundstage produced by these monitors is incredible, you can easily locate the different sections of the orchestra, and it has enormous depth, as if you're sitting in the back of the hall.
This project hardly qualifies as DIY as all I did was drill, screw and config the software.
It just shows the beauty of the modern consumer world where anyone can build epic quality speakers with minimal skills.
