That's a bit of an exaggeration, don't you think? You want to be starting from something where the drivers all have good performance and sufficient maximum output in bands that will work reasonably well with the dispersion and baffle spacing of each driver. No fixing any of that with DSP. The main thing DSP gets you (short of fancy FIR experiments and that sort of thing) is free crossover revisions, and access to filters that are only practical at line level. That's a huge plus, but not a panacea.

A bit of an exageration, I suppose. I was assuming that the designer was not retarded.

I have yet to hear an active speaker worthwhile , so yes a big stretch , seeing no one has gotten it right yet ...

See my post on testing the wrong way as it relates to driver cost and results. Simple, but a view.

On active speakers, could it be at an active speaker of sufficient quality just won't package well? I mean, try to put a serious quality amp in a 17L monitor speaker.

There is no reason to assume that with an active speaker drivers and amps have to share an enclosure.

I on the other hand have yet to come across a worthwhile passive speaker or one that could not be improved by running active.

Dynaudio does or at least used to sell the BM5 active or passive.
In a direct comparison the passive was very much inferior to my ears.
Others had the same experience with otherwise identical ATCs but they were a bit beyond my price range.

Well, everything is a compromise isn't it?

If you have to spend more money on new amps of a quality equal to what you already own for each 'way' in your speaker, plus the active components themselves, then that means you have *less* money to spend for better quality drivers.

So, higher quality drivers with passive xo's or poorer quality drivers with active xo's?

Personally, I would think that if the OP found the S8's to be very much to his liking with passive xo's, then building a similar diy system with much better drivers but still with passive xo's will be more than satisfactory. And simpler too.

The cost of high-quality passive crossover components is far from trivial.

If you are prepared to buy s/h or able to build your own amps the difference in cost is not that great at all when using the same drivers.

There is also an inevitable insertion loss with passive crossovers so to reach the same SPL levels a passive design will need a much bigger amp than an active design.
