Default Magnets to hold grilles

Hi,

I am planning to use magnets to hold the speaker grilles in place.
Could someone upload some pics or a scanned sketch illustrating how it is recommended to fit the magnets?

I was thinking of fitting a metallic (magnetic) cubic insert into the front baffle from the back, and then fitting small magnets close to the corners of the grilles.

Doubts: will the magnet affect the loudspeaker performance?
What magnet type is recommended to use for this?

Thanks to everybody,

B

A lot of our products use magnets from a factory in China and I have to say that rare-earth magnets are just great for holding things together. Note: Rare-earth = neodymium = NdFeBr composition.

Use magnets in the the grill and steel screws in your enclosure. With neodymium magnets, the holding force will be strong enough and yet not so strong that it is difficult to remove. Two magnets in a bond are extremely difficult to pull apart and may cause enough stress to mess up your grilles. Estimate that a neodymium button magnet sized at 3/8"dia x .125" thick (10mm x 3mm) will easily pick up a pound (1/2 kg) of weight.

I'm using Velcro to hold my grills. I usually don't use grills at all, but found out that a simple solution to grills is a window based airconditioner filter, which attaches to the speakers with Velcro. Basically, the same idea that Wilson incorporates in their speakers. The filter material is also pretty transparent and only some of the highest frequencies are "filtered"

...which to my ears usually isn't a bad thing.

I also use a similar material in my car to completely cover the fiberglass pods I made to hold my Seas coaxes. It's a marine carpet that is fairly transparent when you hold it up to the light, which translates into almost completely transparent to sound, and in my opinion, it tends to be not-so-transparent in some places that seem to be almost an improvement.

Just an idle [and perhaps silly] question; why don't you use proper grille clips? its not too difficult to do if you are worried about lining everything up so they press into place then do what I do everytime I'm in the speaker building mode; get a sheet of cheap 3 ply cut the same size and shape as the grille you want to use and mark out the positions for the location of the clips then drive a small nail through so that when you lay it on the baffle all you have to do is gently tap the nails so that they mark the corresponding hole for the female clip then bore out or drill to the apropriate size and bingo! youre done simple no? cheers and best regards to all.... tomcat:
