I will begetting the hf144 or 204. Both push resonant impedance down low and will give the option of crossing low or high, depending on what you want handle vocal range.

yes, tempting isnt it
but not so easy at all
for one, bigger drivers are usually built for higher power handling, and less aimed lower frequency
for hifi you dont need the huge powerhandling, and thus its possible to cross lower
but dont forget you need a much bigger waveguide
and its getting a lot more expencive

another problem could the transition to a big woofer
two drivers with totally different sound character
cannot be easy I guess
is it worth it ? I dont know, maybe it is
but surely, just crossing low is not all there is to it

looking at the freq. response for the HF144........

nice looking driver, but response seems a bit bumpy
but maybe thats normal, i dont know
also most of the big waveguides appear to have a bit rough upper frequency
I wouldnt mind trying it myself tho
too risky for me, but if it sound like the HF100, Im in :D

found a couple interesting sites i case you are interested.

wow, thats cool
I didnt know my own waveguide was a Iwata profile
or at least a 'look alike'
no wonder it sounds so good :)

Why do you think this would be the case?
series DCR raising Q at system resonance?
Q could be part of it, of course. I really don't know "why", it just a subjective impression that I've gotten on a lot of different systems. Active can sound a bit hyper-realistic to me. So detailed it sounds better than real. Like peering at the music thru a microscope. Very impressive, to be sure, but a good passive crossovers seem more organic, more natural to my ears. That sounds like pure woo-woo, I know - but that's how I hear it! :D

(Active subs are a different matter).

my HF100 is the old one
from memory its more like the HF102, a bit round and rolled off
the new revised model should be able to go lower
but maybe the low ressonance peak is lowest possible xo point
but I dont know

hmm, right now its a 6.8uf cap looking into 15ohm series resitor, then some inductors and resitors in paralel, and a very small series inductor looking into a small resistor
its probably not crossed very low, maybe just below 2khz, like maybe 1.7khz, but I really dont know

that said, I did put a lot of work into making the throat transistion smooth as possible
CD exit angle ? I dont see there could be much to do about it

Seeing him monday!

heres some pix I found to wet the appetite

To me the first pic of the E-JMLC-300 looks like a triffid that might swallow you whole if you talk while its playing! Im liking the JMLC-400.........
