Default Tweeter upgrade

I have a pair of Mordant Short Pageant II speakers which I bought new in 1981. When I got into DIY hi-fi in 1996, they were the first things to be replaced in favour of a kit speaker which was a big improvement and were relegated to the spare room to serve as test speakers.

Now when I built my first Gainclone amps and used the Pageants to test them, I found that the two went together very well. A friend who came around to listen to my new VBIGC also commented on how good they sound but we both noted the platic dome tweeter as being the weak link so I thought I should try replacing it with something better.

Unfortunately, I have no specs for the speakers other than they have a sensitivity of 96db. So my question is, should I aim for tweeters with the same sensitivity (or as close as I can get)?

If you change out the tweeter, you'll have to redesign the crossover. The chances that a drop-in will work properly are close to zilch. I'd measure the acoustic output of the tweeter/crossover on axis, then design the new tweeter/crossover to give the same acoustic response in the crossover region. I'd also try to verify that 96 dB sensitivity figure- that's a pretty high number.

Plastic domes do tend to be nasty. Treated silk, aluminum, or titanium are much better materials.

Unfortunately, there is no specification on the X-over and it is extremely difficultto get at (like most of them). Perhaps, it is not a good idea to throw money at these old speakers on the off-chance that I will hit the jackpot!
